Cross-border tax FAQ.

I'm a U.S. citizen living in Canada. Do I have to file a U.S. return?

Yes. U.S. citizens and green card holders must file a U.S. return every year wherever they live, even if no U.S. tax is owed. Foreign tax credits and the Canada–U.S. tax treaty usually prevent double tax.

What is an FBAR?

The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) reports your non-U.S. bank and investment accounts if their combined highest balance was over US$10,000 at any time in the year. It is filed separately from your tax return.

I haven't filed U.S. returns for years. What can I do?

The IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures let many people catch up by filing 3 years of returns and 6 years of FBARs, usually without penalties. We can check whether you qualify.

I'm moving between Canada and the U.S. What should I plan for?

Plan before you move: your departure date, departure tax on certain assets, RRSP and TFSA treatment, and filing in both countries in the year you move.

Can you help if I don't live near Surrey?

Yes. We serve clients across Canada and the U.S. by phone, video and secure document upload, as well as in person at our Surrey office.
