CANADA AND U.S. CROSS-BORDER TAX FROM SURREY, BC
Cross-Border Tax Services for Canada and the U.S.
Cross-border tax is our specialty. iCanTax Service Inc. prepares Canadian and U.S. returns together, so income, credits and reporting line up on both sides of the border. We help U.S. citizens living in Canada, Canadians with U.S. income or property, people moving between the two countries, and businesses with operations in both.
SERVICE 01
U.S. citizens and green card holders in Canada
We prepare your U.S. 1040 together with your Canadian T1, claim foreign tax credits and help you stay compliant with FBAR and Form 8938 reporting.
SERVICE 02
Leaving or moving to Canada
We prepare departure and arrival returns, including deemed disposition reporting, Form T1161 and T1243, and the elections that can defer tax on your departure.
SERVICE 03
U.S. rental property and investments
If you own U.S. rental property or investments, we prepare the 1040-NR and state returns where required and report the income correctly on your Canadian return.
SERVICE 04
RRSPs, IRAs, 401(k)s and stock compensation
We report retirement accounts under the Canada-U.S. tax treaty and handle RSUs, stock options and ESPP shares that are taxed in both countries.
SERVICE 05
Foreign reporting
We prepare Form T1135 for Canadians with specified foreign property costing more than $100,000, and U.S. FBAR and Form 8938 disclosures.
SERVICE 06
Catching up on missed U.S. filings
If you are a U.S. citizen who has not been filing, we can review whether the IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures fit your situation and prepare the returns and FBARs.
Snowbirds and cross-border commuters
Canadians who spend winters in the U.S. may need to file Form 8840 to show a closer connection to Canada, and people who live in one country and work in the other need both returns coordinated. We help you work out what applies to you.
Cross-border tax FAQ
I am a U.S. citizen living in Canada. Do I still file U.S. returns?
Yes. U.S. citizens must file a U.S. return each year wherever they live, but foreign tax credits and exclusions often reduce or eliminate the U.S. tax.
Will I be taxed twice?
In most cases no. The Canada-U.S. tax treaty and foreign tax credits are designed to prevent double taxation, but the returns must be prepared together to claim them correctly.
What happens when I leave Canada?
You may be treated as having sold certain property at fair market value on the day you leave, and you file a departure return for that year. We explain what applies and which elections are available.
Can you prepare both my Canadian and U.S. returns?
Yes. We prepare both in our Surrey office or online.
